On March 8, 2025, the world will unite to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) with the powerful theme “Accelerate Action.” This year’s focus is on speeding up progress toward gender equality, recognizing that at the current pace, it could take more than 130 years to achieve full parity. The call to action is clear: we must do more, and we must do it faster.
Why “Accelerate Action”?
While great strides have been made in women’s rights, the reality is that gender inequality remains deeply entrenched in many aspects of life. From the gender pay gap to barriers in leadership, bias, and discrimination still hold women back. “Accelerate Action” aims to dismantle these barriers and push for real, lasting change.

A Day of Celebration and Advocacy
International Women’s Day is not just a celebration of achievements—it’s a moment to reflect on the struggles women continue to face. Around the world, rallies, panel discussions, and events will highlight success stories and the work still needed to create a fair and inclusive society.
Governments, businesses, and communities are urged to take tangible steps toward gender equality, whether by enacting policies, supporting women-led initiatives, or simply challenging outdated stereotypes.
Global Events and Initiatives
Numerous events are planned worldwide to mark IWD 2025. In Australia, the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (AusIMM) is hosting a special event on March 4 to highlight the role of women in STEM fields. In the U.S., major cities will hold Women’s History Month celebrations, focusing on empowerment, leadership, and social justice. The United Nations and various NGOs will also lead discussions on policy changes needed to protect and uplift women globally.
A Look Back: 30 Years Since the 1995 Beijing Declaration

30th anniversary of the landmark 1995 NGO Forum on Women
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the landmark 1995 NGO Forum on Women in Beijing, where leaders from around the world laid out a framework for achieving gender equality. While some progress has been made, many of the commitments from that declaration remain unfulfilled. This anniversary serves as a reminder that we must keep pushing forward.
How Can Get Involved?
- Support women-led businesses and initiatives
- Advocate for workplace equality and challenge biases
- Attend local events and discussions on gender issues
- Use social media to spread awareness using #AccelerateAction and #IWD2025
International Women’s Day 2025 is a call for urgency. The time for slow progress is over. We must push forward together to ensure that the next generation of women and girls inherits a world where equality is the norm, not the exception.
