Los Angeles – The 97th Academy Awards, held on March 2, 2025, delivered a major surprise as Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her role in Anora. The independent film, directed by Sean Baker, took home five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Madison’s performance as Ani, a young dancer caught in a whirlwind romance with a Russian oligarch, earned widespread acclaim. In her emotional acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to the sex worker community, saying, “Your stories deserve to be told with truth and dignity.”
Her victory was unexpected, as Demi Moore had been a favorite for The Substance. The category also included Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Emma Stone (Poor Things).
With Anora dominating the night, Madison’s win marks a major milestone in her rising career and a triumph for independent cinema.
